Genre Peak? Never heard of them so naturally I threw their new album, Redux, into my car stereo and began to listen. At first I thought that this was going to be a band that favored the whole dark wave sound with Goth sensibilities, the singer did in fact sound a bit Peter Murphy/Eric Clayton. When the second track came on it was a different singer, female. I scratched my head and listened until I had come to the end of the album and then listened to it again when I got home from the beginning.

My first thought is that, yes, the sound of Genre Peak definitely has a Goth sensibility about it. I mean, just listen to those lyrics. I can be there in the darkness/my mouth slowly forming words around us/the outside car lights cross the wall and the acid raindrops start to fall. Sure, the lyrical does sound a bit juvenile at times but GP has something that is undeniable. A mixture of innovative instrumental construction partnered with a familiar echo of days gone by. Look at me getting all poetic, but yeah, that pretty sums it up for me.

The album includes 11 tracks which feature both the male and female vocals plus an instrumental track. For those that like the darker gloomier stuff you’ll more then likely enjoy this album. It has a small nagging sense that it was done on a budget and isn’t as polished in small spots here and there but the album delivers in its own way. I highly suggest giving it a look. Enjoy.
