My introduction to Speakers was a short lived one. No, literally, I had one song to check out from their forthcoming New Frequency EP. Why New Frequency as a title you may ask? The duo behind Speakers, Keon B and Blair Taylor, say it’s because their going in a direction you’ve never heard before. Ohhhhh! I’ve come across many a band that have put that figurative foot in their mouths before. Honestly, it’s a hard act to follow. Your either going to be exceptionally mind blowing, in which case the world should have already heard of you, or your just not going to live up to that kind of hype.

The precursor track to the duo’s upcoming release is titled And Her Too. I was given the explicit version to peruse. My first go round with the track brought me to some key points. 1) The track, musically, feels like it’s treading the same waters Chromeo covered more then ten years ago. 2) The lyrical content felt like it was very much the same old, same old stuff. One guy throws out 80’s references (a Whodini reference to be exact) in a Michael Jackson meets whoever style, while the other descends into the mediocrity of selling the track with sub par topics like sex and partying. To be honest, I wasn’t really feeling Keon B at all. Whoever let this mix out of the booth should get a hefty slap on the wrist for allowing Keon’s somewhat over relaxed vocal delivery to make it to the final cut. Maybe that was his version of smooth but I just couldn’t get behind it. On a side note I got a glimpse of the EP and really enjoyed Runnin' It (Feat. Travie McCoy).

The track shows a bit of promise and I guess we’ll just have to wait and see if the rest of the EP follows suit or truly is some sort of new sound that we’ve never come across before. Time will tell. As always final judgment is yours.
