Woody Allen's masterpiece has finally hit Blu-ray and it couldn't have come at a better time. Given his recent success with Midnight in Paris,  the demand for any of his films in high definition has never been higher. What better of a film to start on than the film that changed Woody Allen's life forever: Annie Hall. 

Alvy Singer (Woody Allen) is a complicated man. Filling others with the gift of laughter, Alvy finds it difficult to find joy in his own life. His relationships are extremely one-sided, as Alvy seems to find these women as outlets for his rants on life, outside of the bedroom.  That all changes he meets Annie Hall (Diane Keaton). There's no instant connection. There's not even a story of how he swept Annie off her feet. From square one, they simply were together. Alvy's charisma and outlook on life was well balanced with Annie's artistic view of the world and her childlike sense of wonder. Through the next hour, we're given a beautiful look into how easily true love can come and go in life. Can Alvy look past himself and better his life by keeping Annie in his or is he destined to live life with random one night stands with women as equally bored as he? It all rests in the hands of Alvy, so the odds don't look too good.

Annie Hall is easily one of the most inspiring films ever crafted. What is written to almost seem like an exact replica of Woody Allen's early lovelife comes across as both romantic and heartbreaking. Though, not for his losses, more than his inability to relate to others. Alvy Singer is a lost soul trapped inside the potluck of New York and is desperately trying to make a connection. This connection isn't made right at first, but the moment Alvy meets Annie, it's easy to tell that he's not in for just another lonely night with a stranger. The chemistry between Woody Allen and Diane Keaton is flawless. Easily dissecting each other until the other admits defeat is some of the best romantic chemistry you can ask for. It's so ironic that Allen put together one of the best romantic comedies of all time, yet not romantic comedy attempts to recreate this style of work. Thankfully, that only preserves Annie Hall as one of a kind and miracously remarkable. 

Watching Annie Hall on Blu-ray was an all new experience to the film I've seen easily ten times. Annie and Alvy's walk through New York looks nothing short of beautiful in 1080p resolution. The high resolution transfer looks pretty fantastic for a film crafted in 1977. Romantic comedies usually don't add up to much on high resolution transfers past outside scenery. Thankfully, Annie Hall doesn't fall into the majority here. The constant back-and-forth bickering between the two lovestruck New Yorkers has never sounded better on my surround sound, with just the right amount of crisp when "It Had To Be You" begins to play. Annie Hall is a fantastic addition to any Blu-ray collection, if not just for the reasoning that no movie collection in general is complete without it. 

Allen is a unique filmmaker and Annie Hall is the film that solidified himt that exact title. Annie Hall is a fantastic film that equally warms and breaks the heart and has never looked or sounded better than it does on Blu-ray high definition. Any avid film fanatic would embrace this transfer with open arms just as much as I have.
