Title: Casa de mi Padre Genre: Comedy Starring: Will Ferrell, Gael García Bernal, Diego Luna, Genesis Rodriguez, Pedro Armendariz Jr., Nick Offerman, Efren Ramirez, Adrian Martinez Director: Matt Piedmont Studio: Lions Gate Runtime: 85 minutes Release Date: July 17, 2012 Format: BLU-RAY MPAA Rating: Rating: ( )Grade: C Will Ferrell has done his fair share of comedies but nothing quite compares to the telenovela comedy/drama that is Casa de mi Padre. Made entirely in Spanish, Armando Alvarez (Ferrell) must save his father’s ranch from the greedy Mexican drug lord Onza (Gael Garcia Bernal). Things become further complicated when his own brother Raul (Diego Luna) becomes involved in the drug business as well. Casa de mi Padre is an interesting attempt at broadening Will Ferrell’s comedy style but the film doesn’t come across as anything more than a gimmick. Even the Blu-ray menu itself can be translated into all Spanish if you wish. There are some genuinely humorous moments, but for an 85 minute film it sure does drag on. While I applaud Ferrell for actually speaking Spanish, throughout the film, it does appear forced. There are plenty of awkward silences or pointlessly extended scenes filled with unnecessary laughter. It’s almost as if they wanted to give Ferrell as little a speaking role as possible in an attempt to mask his Spanish-speaking abilities, even though he isn’t that bad. QUALITY: BONUS FEATURES: |
