Two stories running parallel to one another in the Clamp multiverse double feature; Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicles: Princess of the Country of Birdcages The Movie and xxxHOLiC: A Midsummer Nights Dream The Movie, takes you into two worlds united by decision and fate, tied together by Yuko The Dimensional Witch.
QUALTY:
Tsubasa is an amazing looking feature with audio that’s incredibly sweeping though the design of the soundtrack (Dolby True HD 5.1) tends to go from quiet to loud often it helps create a cinematic experience that adds to the short feature. The way this anime is drawn and represented is nothing revolutionary but it does fill the screen with vibrant colors and sharp detail. The xxHOLiC feature however is incredible as the style of the show really plays to the added benefit of BLU-RAY. Color is vibrant already with Watanuki’s issue playing in but the direction of the film changes in so many aspects as the characters walk through a Manchester House type location dipping between realities and dreams. Audio here was a little less stellar. Dialogue seemed a bit low at times but all together not bad. On a whole I did enjoy the Tsubasa feature though I can’t really say it would have been a great loss had it not come into existence. The connection between the two films is cool in a novelty way but by no means mind blowing.
BONUS FEATURES:
Over two hours of bonus features makes this disc well worth the price. Both include the Premier, Voice Montages, and other traditional extra features. Tsubasa contains a brief back story on the Country of Birdcages. Conceptual artwork, commentaries, and original trailers for the release and traditional FUNimation trailers for various other anime series. The list for each features bonus materials is lengthy. Some of it good and some of it fun for a one time view.
