Title: Shaun the Sheep: A Woolly Good Time Genre: Animation Director: Chris Sadler, Darren Walsh, Dave Osmand, Mike Mort, JP Vine Studio: Lyons / Hit Ent. Runtime: 40 Minutes Release Date: February 16, 2010 Format: DVD Discs: 1 MPAA Rating: Rating: ( )Grade: A Bonus Features: Sing-Along with Shaun & The Mini Making of Shaun From the Oscar winning creators of Wallace & Gromit comes Shaun the Sheep in his brand new adventure A Woolly Good Time. This new 40 minute collection contains Washday, Tooth Fairy, The Farmer’s Niece, Snore-Worn Shaun, Helping Hound, Big Top Timmy, plus bonus features. I have to admit never really being a big fan of Shaun the Sheep. There’s just something about a show that has absolutely no dialogue and which relies on dry humor made present only by gesture. In this new collection, however how unoriginal some of the episodes were, I was laughing the whole time. I sat through the entirety of the disc at least twice if not more enjoying the subtly of old jokes made new by the characters and the only translations that Shaun the Sheep has to offer; facial expressions and body language. The Episode Tooth Fairy finds us in the same old routine; Bitzer the sheep dog has a bad tooth and he tries everything to get it out including tying his tooth to a barn gate and swinging it closed. While we’ve been here before the strange innocence of sheep and dog giving us an animals perspective on our hygiene practices is made hilarious by their fear and misunderstanding. The Farmer’s Niece finds the animals on the farm trying to entertain as the farmer puts them in charge while he bakes a cake for her birthday. Imagine the niece in Finding Nemo who is to inherit Nemo at the end of the film and you get a pretty good picture of what the animals are in for. While it could go just the smash and grab style cartoons go for (the niece smashing and grabbing the ears, tails, and wool of the sheep) the writers get creative and make the episode more entertaining and original. Snore-Worn Shaun is another example of old made new when Shaun and the crew find they cannot sleep because of one big sheep’s snoring problems keeping them awake all night. As they try to find ways for him to stop snoring, trying to not disturb the farmer, and make time enough to get some sleep hilarity ensues. Of course we all know how this particular skit ends but the way its written in works. All together one of the better Shaun of the Sheep collections I’ve come across for review so far. Definitely good for a purchase or rental. Enjoy. |
