Title: Suck Genre: Comedy, Horror, Musical Starring: Malcolm McDowell, Dave Foley, Henry Rollins, Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper Director: Rob Stefaniuk Studio: E1 Entertainment Runtime: 96 mins Release Date: September 28, 2010 Format: BLU-RAY Discs: 1 MPAA Rating: Rating: ( )Grade: C+ The elusive Vampire Rock'n'Roll Horror Comedy film…it’s rarely seen in public these days. And now I know why. It…wait for it…it sucks! Bwaahahaha… Ok, terrible joke. And truth be told, a not-so terrible movie. I’ll give credit where credit is due: the concept of a struggling rock band being given a second chance at life, fame and fortune for the small price of being turned into vampires is a somewhat intriguing idea. Throw in the promise of some sweet cameos from guys like Alice Cooper, Henry Rollins, Iggy Pop and Dave Foley (not to mention Malcolm McDowell as a modern-day vampire hunter) and it definitely sounds like we’re going somewhere with this. But sadly the execution falls short. Thankfully they don’t go the sparkly, melodramatic route of Twilight, but the vampire aspects of the story don’t have much bite (heh, sorry). There’s not much of a threat there, so when the band is confronted with the first member who becomes a bloodsucker, it’s almost treated as a bit of an afterthought. Their nonchalant attitude would be funnier if the threat seemed more, well, threatening. QUALITY: BONUS FEATURES: The front cover of the DVD case has a quote from Rolling Stone along the bottom that is probably a case of accidental damning with faint praise: “Suck has the potential to be a cult classic.” I guess that might end up being true at some point, but for now, this is merely a film that fails to be the sum of its parts. |
