Late one night Kevin awakes to a noise in his room and discovers a group of little thieves from another time. Navigating with the help of a special map that they stole from The Supreme Being, Kevin is led on an adventure through time where he meets Robin Hood, Napoleon, & King Agamemnon while his friends attempt to steal various treasures that will make them rich. To be able to keep up their quest for riches they have to try and stay off The Supreme Being’s radar which lands them smack into the hands of Evil and a battle they cannot run from. Absolutely loved this movie when I was a kid and after re-watching it was still a great movie. Now this has been released numerous times before on VHS & DVD (I will run through those below) but I’m trying to slowly trade my collection in for Blu-Ray so I was excited that this was released so quickly given its age. After watching it I wish that they had taken a bit more time on it though. There are moments where it is very impressive the quality of footage you are watching but those are few. Most of the time there isn’t too much difference between this & watching it on DVD. But then there are moments where it looks like you are watching an old VHS that was bought at a yard sale and has seen much better days. The colors are faded, it is grainy, covered in hairs, and there are some pretty bad scratches. I just hate having to give such an awesome movie such a low grade. But at this point in time the whole reason to purchase a Blu-Ray of a movie that you probably already own is to upgrade, and this just isn’t worthy of calling an upgrade. It features the bare minimum of bonus features (Commentary & trailer) that many previous releases already had, does not include some bonus features that other releases did have such as “The Directors: The Films Of Terry Gilliam”, scrapbook, and Universe map, and at times is the quality of the VHS release. My final thoughts: If you have not seen this movie you really should. It is a fantastic fantasy, that’s a little twisted & off-beat. Great for people that love movies similar to “The Neverending Story” &“Labyrinth”. If you are already a fan & own a previous release I really see no need to re-buy this one as the version you own is probably equivalent or better quality & possibly superior bonus feature wise (Unless you have VHS and they my god what are you waiting for? I think it is time to at least make the leap to DVD). 1997 – VHS: You get the movie. Oh & some closed caption. 1999 – DVD: Theatrical Trailer, Talent Bios 1999 – Criterion Collection: Commentary by director Terry Gilliam, Michael Palin, John Cleese, David Warner, & Crag Warnock, Theatrical Trailer, & Time Bandits Scrapbook 2004 – Special Edition 2 Disc Set: “The Directors: The Films Of Terry Gilliam A Career Retrospective” (featuring interviews with Terry Gilliam & others), Interview with Terry Gilliam & Michael Palin, Theatrical Trailers, Fold-Out Map Of The Universe with Liner Notes, Terry Gilliam Bio, DVD-ROM of Original Screenplay |
