Members of the Heartbreakers have played on each of Tom Petty's solo albums and the band has always backed him when touring in support of those albums. ~Wikipedia
Right off the bat if your not familiar with the Classic Albums releases these releases are not concert films nor are they music video releases. What you do get is a history of whatever album it is the product is selling, in this case Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers third release Damn The Torpedoes. There are instances of acoustic segments from when the documentary was being filmed but not complete songs. If you want the music go buy the album or find a live DVD to satisfy your cravings. If your looking for a history of the band and the album look no further as Damn The Torpedoes does an excellent job of throwing together an informative documentary.
QUALITY:
The documentary splices together recent interviews in studio with archive footage from the bands home video’s as well as live performances and music video’s so it’s a mish mash of quality. The more recent interviews (1080i) look fabulous though. Skin tones are correct, definition and color acute. The only real issue would be lighting at one location where skin tone takes on a reddish tint, again due to a lighting issue, but for the most part the updated segments look amazing. Archive footage is as you would expect; grainy, scratched, dated. The flow of the material works though offering up the two differing qualities as complimentary presentations to one another. Sound quality is LCPM stereo which works well for the dialogue heavy documentary.
BONUS FEATURES:
A staggering 42+ minutes of bonus features considering the actual documentary is only 55 minutes long. Some of these bonus features include additional material not included in the television broadcast. Again the in-studio interviews are in crisp high definition (1080i) so there’s no decline in quality for the bonus features and there are more archive segments as well. Really just an extension of the documentary that goes into more detail about the smaller details as well as the recording process of the album.
