Title: The Bourne Ultimatum Genre: Action/Adventure Starring: Matt Damon, Julia Stiles, David Strathairn, Scott Glenn, Paddy Considine, Albert Finney Director: Paul Greengrass Studio: Universal Runtime: 1 Hour, 51 Minutes In Theatres: August 3, 2007 MPAA Rating: Rating: ( )Grade: C The Bourne Ultimatum starts off strong with an adrenaline pumping score that paces with the action but fizzles out as the film goes on. Its not that the film isn’t satisfying for fans of action films or spy films but it seems to have run its course in the first film. The only thing that keeps the franchise moving is the "carrot on a stick" storyline that promises an answer to the main plot conundrum. In preparation for this film I rented the first two, made it through the first, and couldn’t help but notice similarities between the two films, maybe too similar. One particular event includes Bourne fighting off an assassin and a woman dying and cutting her hair. It seemed to be one of the high points in the film for the audience but I just couldn’t look past the cheap attempt at heightening the films mood. This is, for all intents and purposes, a mindless action flick. As usual Damon plays an infallible smartest guy in the room type. I don’t usually like to attack a film based on the typecasting of one of its actors but the fact that this is the only character Damon will play takes the suspense out of the film. Can’t go into detail about the film and how much damage Damon’s character actually takes but it brought down the validity of the film greatly. Like I said, if you’re a fan of action or spy films then this is a film your going to enjoy. Fair warning, this is not a stand alone film, I would highly suggest seeing the first two otherwise you may find yourself lost. |
