Title: The Disapperance of Alice Creed Starring: Gemma Arterton, Martin Compston, Eddie Marsan Director: J Blakeson Studio: Cinemanx Runtime: 100 minutes In Theatres: August 6, 2010 MPAA Rating: Rating: ( )Grade: B+ The title of the film says it all. Danny and his buddy Vic are two ex-convicts who are looking to get paid. They decide to kidnap Alice Creed, the daughter of some rich businessman and ransom her off for millions. The Disappearance of Alice Creed is a very simplistic film. Gemma Arterton, Martin Compston, and Eddie Marsan are the old actors cast and no one else. Dialogue is even used sparingly with actions being the key elements to the story. Everything is seen from the kidnappers point of view, from the initial preparation to the final delivery of the ransom. Director J Blakeson does a great job at putting the audience into the mind of these criminals. As the story goes on, we start to learn more about each of the people involved. You will be bombarded with twists and shocking revelations that you simply couldn't see coming. Just when you think the film will take you in one direction, it performs a U-turn and goes in the complete opposite. As you can imagine, much of the film holds you in suspense. Danny and Vic are constantly questioning if they're doing everything right or if they're going to get caught. Trust is another important key element that keeps popping up over the course of the story. As thrilling as a kidnapping and ransom sound, there are moments that can be quite boring. There are no flashy visual effects or heart-pumping music. You'll even watch them eat their meals or go to the bathroom and other daily routines we think nothing of. When you have a girl tied up in the other room though, that's when things get interesting. Overall, The Disappearance of Alice Creed is a great looking film that contrasts well with the flashy Hollywood blockbusters we see today. It relies on the acting skills of everyone involved and Arterton, Compston, and Marsan put on a noteworthy performance. If you have the opportunity to watch it, do so. You won't regret it. |
