Mummies, magic, and the O’Connell family go hand in hand so when a thousand year old Emperor from China is awakened and sets forth is plan to rule the Earth; it’s just another day,  At one point, Emperor Han (Jet Li) was the greatest ruler in all of China. He had defeated every opponent except for one, death. Determined to find the secrets of immortality, he seeks out a witch who can help him, only to have a curse befall him and trap him in stone. Now, thousands of years later, his tomb has been opened and the curse has been lifted. The only people who can stop the path of destruction by Han are Rick O’Connell (Brendan Frasier), his wife Evelyn (Maria Bello) and now grown up son Alex (Luke Ford). Together, the family will be forced out of retirement for one last battle of the dead and, with the help of some friends along the way, save the world again.

In this sequel of a sequel, Imhotep has finally been put to rest and a new “mummy” has come forth. I say “mummy” because it seems everything about the series has changed. No longer are they in Egypt batting the stereotypical mummy and even the characters are different. Alex is no longer a child but an adult, following in his father’s footsteps. Evelyn is played by Bello instead of Rachel Weisz, whom we have grown accustomed to over the years. The only joy I found was in the dimwitted brother, Jonathan. He was his usually self always looking for riches and attempting to keep out of danger. New addition Lin, who is the current guardian to the Emperors tomb, was simply okay. Here role was very cliché, and you pretty much knew how things would end up right from the start.

The story is absolutely ridiculous. Things are just thrown around and introduced randomly and with no real plot, they completely fall flat. The charm of the first two films is gone here. No longer are there witty jokes by Brendan Frasier. Instead we get a rather 2D character whose acting skills have diminished quite a lot in the past few years. Even Jet Li didn’t seem up to par in this one. Sure there were some fight scenes but for the most part, it was a CGI stick walking around the place. If you are looking for anything serious, Tomb of the Dragon Emperor is not for you.
