Show: Casshern Sins Season/Volume: Part 1 Genre: Anime Starring: Eric Vale, Trina Nishimura, Jerry Russell, Paul Slavens Studio: Funimation Runtime: 288 minutes Release Date: August 17, 2010 Format: DVD Discs: 2 Rating: ( )Grade: A Casshern Sins is a 2008 reboot of the popular anime series. The original involves a cybernetic neo-human cyborg who hunts down and destroys robots who have become corrupted and taken over the world. Together with his robotic dog Friender and fellow robot Luna, he must destroy the powerful Braiking Boss, the main antagonist of the series. Sins is quite different from the original although many of the characters remain. The world as we know it is plagued by a robotic disease called the Ruin, causing robots to rust and die. This was caused because the powerful Casshern killed the Sun Named Moon, Luna. She was the source of all life on Earth and her death was the ultimate cuase of this post-apocalyptic world. After her death, Casshern became immortal himself, instantly healing any wounds. He also forgot any recollection of anything prior to the appearance of the Ruin. Part 1 focuses on Casshern learning who he is and what he has done. He's a cyborg with a heart it seems. Now that there's the Ruin, robots are dying, something they never did before. They're now more similar to humans than ever. Many of the robots have humanoid appearances such as Casshern. The bandits in the anime tend to keep the stereotypical robot look though. Casshern just wants answers and isn't looking for a fight or challenge. Rumor has it though, that if you eat Casshern, you gain his eternal life so every robot wants his blood. He's the ultimate fighting machine so going up against him is always a bad idea although it appears that he cannot control his strength at times. Casshern is perhaps too powerful. He rarely gets injured and if he does, he just heals himself after each battle. Battles really do appear to be one-sided. We are introduced to two others like him, Dio and Leda, but they're not near as powerful. I'm a fan of only a few select animes such as Dragon Ball Z and Death Note, and it looks like Casshern Sins will be added to that list. I recognized Casshern from his appearance in the Wii fighting game Tatsunoko vs. Capcom but have never seen the anime until now. I love the whole robots living in a post-apocalyptic world setting and the story is very intriguing. While I've never seen the original, Sins is pretty awesome on its own accord. Part 1 leaves you with some pretty gapping questions that I hope will be answered with Part 2. It's not quite action oriented as I would have liked but the story is excellent and scattered battle scenes keep things going. I highly recommend Casshern Sins. |
