Doc Martin Ellingham is a former surgeon from London, now a medical practitioner in the small seaside Cornish town of Portwenn. In Series 2, he encounters accidents such as cooking oil burns and snake bites, sicknesses like possible salmonella poisoning, and alcohol addiction. He has enough problems of his own – mainly due to his personality. He has not spoken with his parents for more than seven years, and despite the fact that he has zero social skills, he has a feeling for Louisa Glasson, a primary school teacher who has just applied for a primary school headmistress position. In the episode “The Family Way” we get to know Martin’s father, who by the way is nothing like him.
Even though there are currently many doctor series with main characters ranging from serious to funny, this British show also depicts more than just medical problems. Martin Clunes has a remarkable talent which will make viewers love to hate Doctor Martin. The plots are not laugh-out-loud funny but not too serious either. Sometimes you can guess the outcomes of each episode. Nevertheless, Doc Martin offers an interesting twist on how a clumsy, insensitive and offensive doctor from a big city treats small town folks, and how he is treated by them in return. While the doctor investigates how and why people get sick, he needs some help on his personal life and social skills. As a result, the show often goes beyond doctor-patient relationships. Also, the small Cornish town setting is very appealing.
This 3-disc set includes all eight episodes of the second series plus the Christmas special episode, but unfortunately the special features are not special at all. However, this show itself is entertaining, and tackles both serious and funny issues we can relate to. This DVD made me want to check out the first and the rest of the series.
