Show: Hot in Cleveland Season/Volume: 1 Genre: Comedy Starring: Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves, Wendie Malick, Betty White, Carl Reiner Studio: TV Land Runtime: 215 mins Release Date: January 11, 2011 Format: DVD Discs: 2 Rating: ( )Grade: B- Oh Betty White. You have truly become ubiquitous in the twilight of your career. You are indeed a funny lady, but I have to admit that seeing your face and name everywhere these days has nearly reached the pinnacle of comedy cliché. Want to get a quick laugh? Here’s a sweet-looking old lady with an inner Jackass sense of humor! Har har har!! As for the show itself, this is actually a fairly funny new sitcom, cut from the same mold of the majority of other sitcoms: filmed in front of a live studio audience, laugh-tracks, witty one-liners and repartee, goofy scenarios, etc. etc. The cast is pretty solid and likeable. And I have to admit that the overall premise of the show, while paper-thin, is even somewhat charming: three older girlfriends (refreshingly, the show seems to steer clear of branding them as “cougars”) are heading from L.A. to Paris for a getaway trip when their plane suffers mechanical issues and has to take a sudden detour to Cleveland for repairs. While grounded, they visit a local bar and realize that they’ve entered a land of milk and honey for burned out Hollywood types: while they’ve spent their existence in California bemoaning their chances with men, their looks, their careers and their diets, Cleveland presents a new frontier of ordinary people who basically don’t fret about any of that. Granted, it’s an incredibly goofy stereotype and massive overgeneralization, but then that’s what most sitcoms are. At any rate, this newfound paradise gives them a refreshed raison d'être and before you know it, they’re leasing a house, complete with a little old lady who lives in a detached bungalow out back (enter Betty White). To their credit, Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves, and Wendie Malick all have good chemistry and it’s particularly funny to see Betty and Jane go at it. Betty’s character somehow has it out for Jane’s, complete with insults about how she’s a whore and wishes the worst for her. In the end, it’s not a groundbreaking show by any means, but it is an enjoyable one and from that perspective, it mostly succeeds. This season is only 10 episodes long, so it’s fairly short by any standard. If you want some good-old fashioned sitcom humor, this wouldn’t be a bad place to start. After all, those folks at TV Land should have this figured out by now, right? |
