Show: Strike Witches Season/Volume: 1 Genre: Anime Starring: Misato Fukuen, Saeko Chiba, Chiwa Saito, Ami Koshimizu Studio: Funimation Runtime: 300 minutes Release Date: March 30, 2010 Format: DVD Discs: 2 Rating: ( )Grade: C+ BOTTOM LINE If you are anywhere between 18-26 and enjoy Miyazaki films, checking out Strike Witches wouldn't be the worst thing you could do until My Neighbor Totoro: The Squeakquel comes out. In 1944, the world was in terror of a mysterious being called the Neuroi. The Neuroi are an alien species that are almost robotic in nature who have been destroying Earth since 1939. Their only threat is Earth's newest addition to the military, the Strike Witches. These girls are sweet and friendly, but don't give them a reason to put on their striker units. These striker units are almost propellors that allow our heroines to soar the skies and defeat the Neuroi. Equipped with said striker units and an endless amount of magic, these girls can do anything. But they are missing one thing: Yoshika Miyafuji. The story of season one revolves around 14 year old Yoshika and how she hasn't discovered exactly why her father left her family and why she has such strange powers (healing spells, mostly). After a demonstration unaware to her, Yoshika finds herself auditioning for the newest role in the Strike Witches. Not wanting to fight, she must try to understand why she would be so important to the all female battle team. But this isn't the first time the Strike Witches have heard the name Miyafuji. I'm not too into anime. I mean, as a kid we all watched something that was anime in one way or the other. Pokemon, Digimon, or any Studio Ghibili film (Howl's Moving Castle), you name it. But regardless of the animation style of the show, it's a little too formulaic for my taste. Every episode was the exact same as before. Where they would introduce a problem already addressed in a previous episode, Yoshika would prove herself more useful than anyone thought. This isn't to say it's a bad show, just very repetitive. The one thing that allowed me to enjoy this series was the characters. The understanding badass General Sakamoto, adrenaline junkie Charlotte and the dark Sanya are among my favorites. All of the girls seem to be lovable enough to enjoy watching them take down their next enemy in the skies. The main focus of the show being Yoshika is a little annoying for me, just because she whines a LOT. Her background and sense of self-discovery over the series is obviously the reason she is such a large focus of the series, but man does she complain. I would recommend this to the younger audience, but the problem is that the content in Strike Witches is not for anyone below 18. Nudity and scandalous outfits are eyebrow raisers for this show. This isn't much of an issue if the show didn't become so one-themed, allowing the older audience to get bored. If you are anywhere between 18-26 and enjoy Miyazaki films, checking out Strike Witches wouldn't be the worst thing you could do until My Neighbor Totoro: The Squeakquel comes out. |
