Taken From Me is the true story of Tiffany Rubin, a school teacher whose ex kidnapped their son and took him to South Korea. Rubin, who jumped through hoops trying to find a way to reunite her with her son lawfully eventually turned to Mark Miller, founder of  the non-profit organization called The American Association for Lost Children Inc. who helped make it possible. Against all odds and in the face of prison time Rubin and Miller entered Korea and rescued her son bringing him home to American soil.

Films like Taken From Me are nothing we haven’t seen before and for good reason. According to the U.S. State Department there are over 1,600 children who have been abducted by family members and being held in foreign countries. Chances are that number will remain high and what better way to bring this situation to light then to release a film like this one every now and then, and Taken From Me is not only a great film for bringing to light this crime but a powerful one.

Taraji P. Henson plays Tiffany Rubin convincingly tackling the calm to the insanely outraged with ease. The film does a good job of bringing up the issues not only with abductions but how the law plays it kind of hands tied, and having a great actress to emote the frustration towards the justice system while balancing the roller coaster of emotions over a missing child, that only adds to the enveloping factor this film has. I can’t really say that Terry O’Quinn (Lost) really added anything to his part as Mark Miller, I think that could have been played by anyone. The film pretty much relies on Taraji P. Henson and for her part she succeeds.

Overall, as a true story, Taken Away From Me is a bit overdramatic in some places where there is no documentation of some events occurring. I scanned through several websites and there is no mention of a dramatic chase through South Korea as portrayed in the film. Once I reached this part in the film I kind of just chalked it up to dramatization due to the chain of events that lead to said chase. There are some other things in the film that kind of left me scratching my head but overall Taken From Me is a pretty well delivered true story that will have you on the edge of your seat.
