Show: Modern Family Episode(s): Pilot Genre: Comedy Starring: Ty Burrell, Ed O'Neill, Sofia Vergara, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet, Julie Bowen Network: ABC Airdate/Time: September 23, 2009 9:00pm Rating: ( )Grade: A+ Did You Know? Pilot director Jason Winer is probably better known for his role in 2002's Van Wilder where he played nerd Panos Patakos, the first student to rent out Van Wilders skills as a party man. Series creators Steve Levitan (Just Shoot Me) and Christopher Lloyd (Frasier) bring you Modern Family, a television show that takes the more embarrassing and true aspects of family life and tosses them into a mix of one large family unit, with individual issues. Ed O’Neill (Married With Children) plays Jay, an aged Father figurehead whose young wife Gloria, played by Sofia Vergara (Madea Goes To Jail), and her son Manny (Rico Rodriguez) deal with having such an age gap between them and Jay’s inability to be a good Father, even the second time around. Claire and Phil, played by Julie Bowen (Lost) and Ty Burrell (Dawn of the Dead ~2004~), are raising three kids and have been married for 17 years. They are your typical American family with their characters stereotyped to perfection. Last you have Mitchell played by Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Do not Disturb) and Doug played by Eric Stonestreet (CSI), a gay couple who have just adopted a baby from Vietnam. Mitchell is paranoid and self conscious about his lifestyle while Doug is level headed and a little overzealous. Together or individually this family unit had me rolling. The phrase that time flies when your having fun works best here. The show runs a little over twenty minutes in length and almost every second of it is hilarious. Remember that this is introduction so if there is any meat to the show you’ll likely catch it next time round but for what it is you just enjoy it to the point that you’re a little let down the show has such a short run time. Casting director Jeff Greenberg (Ugly Betty) manages to put together an ensemble cast of actors and actresses, even the kid actors are great, who make the material work for them which only adds to the hilarity of the situations they find themselves in. Ty Burrell in particular steals the show with his cool Dad routine (so reminds me of myself) and Ed O’Neill really hit’s the nail on the head for his part as a seasoned parent a little out of his era. So funny. Hopefully this show will stick around and give adults a reason to laugh again without crowding a show with sex, drinking, and college types. Definitely a show to keep your calendar clear for. Laugh and enjoy. Pictures: |
