Back on April 12 Warner Bros. Discovery announced that HBO was moving forward with its Game of Thrones prequel series based on George R. R. Martin’s Dunk and Egg books. During a Q&A session at the Atlanta Film Festival in promotion of his latest short film Night of the Cooters, Martin confirmed that the series is still in the “early stages” of production.
“I don’t know when that’s going to debut,” he told the audience, “but we got a writing room. We got a full season pickup so we’re going to be doing that. That’s in the early stages.” Martin also confirmed that production just recently wrapped on the second season of Dark Winds, which he is an executive producer on.
George R. R. Martin was in town alongside actor Vincent D’Onofrio to debut their short film Night of the Cooters as part of the 2023 Atlanta Film Festival. Check out our exclusive interview with both of them as they discuss their collaboration on the project.
Tales of Dunk and Egg is a series of three novellas written by Martin set 90 years prior to the events of A Song of Ice and Fire. The official synopsis from HBO reads, “A century before the events of ‘Game of Thrones,’ two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.”
Martin will serve as writer and executive producer alongside House of the Dragon co-executive producer Ira Parker. Ryan Condal and Vince Gerardis will also serve as executive producers. Season 2 of House of the Dragon is currently in production.
