Star Wars‘ Mando and his green little sidekick Grogu are making the hyperspace jump from Disney+ to the silver screen for their next adventure, Lucasfilm and Disney announced. Simply titled The Mandalorian & Grogu, the film is planned to go into production later this year. It will be directed by Jon Favreau, and produced by Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy and Dave Filoni.
First debuting on Disney+ in 2019, The Mandalorian would become one of Lucasfilm’s favorite expansions to the beloved Star Wars universe. For three seasons, Pedro Pascal has donned the iconic Mandalorian helmet and journeyed across the galaxy with the adorable Grogu, who fans commonly refer to as Baby Yoda, due to him being the same species as the Jedi Master. While they have appeared in the spin-off The Book of Boba Fett, this will make for their feature film debut.
“I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created. The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting,” director Jon Favreau shared. Kathleen Kennedy, President of Lucasfilm, added, “Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen.”
The Mandalorian & Grogu film is in addition to the previously announced films by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold, and Dave Filoni that were revealed to be in development at Star Wars Celebration. A second season of Ahsoka is also currently in development by Filoni. What isn’t clear is whether or not the film will stand in for the forth season of The Mandalorian that was previously referenced by Jon Favreau.
