I am once again drawn between supporting a DVD release of a TV show or bashing it for lack of content, price, quantity and quality, and availability. All seem to be important factors when it comes to the latest Power Rangers Megaforce release.

The set comes with four episodes that run 96 minutes. Included are United We Stand, Harmony and Dizchord, Who’s Crying Now, and Robo Knight. There are no bonus features, unless you count the Lego action figure that comes with the box.

In typical Power Rangers fashion we have guys in suits fighting, the Power Rangers shooting off witty one liners and kicking butt, and all kinds of strange monsters, including The Loogies, green spandex wearing monsters with swords that act as minions.

You can’t deny the wholesome logic behind the show. The PR’s enjoy fat free foods, exercise, enjoy nature, stand up for the weak, and get along. These themes are paramount in the four episode collection. I’ll never say the show lacks heart, it’s the packaging that has me raising an eyebrow.

Now Amazon sells the release for $8.79 with free shipping if you have Prime. If you don’t, the price goes up by a few dollars. Even if it was just $8.79, if you have Hulu you can watch the entire first season of this show, including the four episodes for less. If you do what I do, use a search engine to collect points for a free month of Hulu, that’s an even bigger win.

Aside from price the collection has no extras. No goofy bloopers, no behind the scenes, not even trailers. What you get is one little Lego action figure (micro figure to be exact). The only real technical bonuses you’re going to find in the collection is that the audio is a high grade 5.1 Dolby Digital (well higher then a 2.0 mono or even stereo DD track), plus the picture is in 16x9 widescreen format. If those standard aspects on almost all DVD releases make you feel any better, more power to you.

In the end, of course it’s all about the kids. If they have to have it and you have the extra money to throw down, go for it. That micro figure will entertain them for a good hour before it gets lost and they’ll always have the four episodes to enjoy.
