Title: Planet Of The Dead Genre: Sci-Fi, Television Starring: David Tennant, Michelle Ryan Studio: BBC Warner Runtime: 60 mins Release Date: July 28, 2009 Format: BLU-RAY Discs: 1 MPAA Rating: Rating: ( )Grade: B- I knew this day was coming. I just didn’t realize it was coming so soon. Yes, this is the day that I confess, as both a sci-fi geek and a fan of all things British, that I have never seen an episode of Dr. Who. Somehow this long-running classic has managed to escape my viewing…until now. This is a 60-minute episode shot in HD. Unfortunately, this probably isn’t the best introduction to the world of Dr. Who, as there’s not much here to help out the newbie viewer. You’re basically dropped into the action and it moves from there. In this particular episode, Dr. Who and the passengers of a double-decker bus in London get transported through a wormhole to a desert planet, inhabited solely by some fly-headed humanoid creatures. QUALITY: BONUS FEATURES: All in all, this isn’t a bad release. It’s just not too meaty for the casual viewer (i.e., me). I’m sure longtime Dr. Who fans will eat this up for dinner. |

The David Tennent/Russel T. Davis Outro
I love Doctor Who, well the new and improved 2005 revision starting with Christopher Eccleston (G.I. Joe) and as of this year ending with David Tennent. With show revisionist Russel T. Davis moving on to give his full time attention to Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood this marks the last season with Davis as the shows head honcho. While he has had a great run once he took on both Torchwood and The Sara Jane Adventures as side projects his work with Who has been a little iffy. Sadly once Tennant took over for Eccleston in 2006 which spawned the two part finale of that particular season the show has been in a sort of stalemate providing some pretty awesome stand alone epsiodes but never really trumping that second season finale. You had Daleks, Torchwood, Cybermen, parallell universes, the works. So has this shortened season of Doctor Who been any better? I think because at the beginning of the season fans knew that the Doctor would be taking on a new face that sparked a curiosity that made everything a little more exciting. The first episode, The New Doctor, considering the title, was a real nail biter but unfortunately they had to go and ruin it by revealing the face of the new Doctor, Matt Smith which brought down the level of excitement. Planet of the Dead defnitely had the same failed concepts that were used in The Sara Jane Adventures and you had to wonder if maybe this was the show creators getting a bit lazy. Still, once a fan always a fan. You get used to the dry wit, the seemingly infallable Doctor, and the convenient escape routes always available to get the Doctor and the people who fall under his care out of harms way. In any case I have been waiting for Doctor Who to start coming out on Blu-ray, have season one @ amazon on stand by for when it happens. Planet of the Dead was the first episode to be shot completely in HD (I believe) and for the price ($13.99 at Amazon) I think this is a test run to see if there is any interest. Uh, Torchwood has been on Blu-Ray forever, a spin-off, a show that only recently got good during the five part mini-series Children of Earth, so whats the deal BBC? So far we have held Doctor Who marathons at my home, my sil's home, and elsewhere, and we haven't grown tired of the Doctor and his companions and tag alongs. Needless to say once the Blu-ray's come out we'll do it all again and love it. Heres hoping.
