Holidays are a time for celebration. Decorations are set up, songs are sang and families are brought together to create new memories of great times. These are traditions that everyone recognizes and celebrates in their own way. However, no one really celebrates holidays better than the people of Halloweentown. The story behind The Nightmare Before Christmas is familiar to almost anyone who grew up in the 90's: The towns' spokesperson for Halloween, Jack Skellington (Voiced by Chris Sarandon), stumbles upon the tradition of Christmas, a massive difference from his home in Halloweentown. Eager to show the town his new discovery, Jack assembles a plan to fully get in the christmas spirit. Of course, for those who populate a town dedicated to ghosts, ghouls and goblins, Christmas trees and presents aren't exactly fitting. Things begin to spiral out of control and Jack must find a way to make everything harmonious between the towns of Halloween and Christmas. Director Henry Selick brought something wonderful to life with the birth of The Nightmare Before Christmas. The childlike wonder of holidays and their traditions were an enjoyable experience, but took a backseat to the stop motion animation with clay figures. It wasn't the first time it had been done, but it definitely marked one of the more accomplished attempts at the art form. And what better way to showcase that animation than with a 3D Blu-Ray upgrade? The Nightmare Before Christmas on 3D Blu-Rays is one to behold. I've been a fan of this film before, but had grown tired of the cult following and the over-exposure of Skellington hoodies and beanie caps. With the conversion to 3D, Selick brought back all the imagination and wonder to Jack Skellington and his ghastly crew. Very few 3D Blu-Rays capture exactly what the director intended to showcase. The Nightmare Before Christmas is absolutely one of those few. The animation is just as fluid as before, if not more. And with Jack walking past tombstones, serenading the moon in the graveyard, it's hard to imagine yourself anywhere but in the graveyard with him. Of course, Animated films are a bit easier to convert to 3D. Yet, they are also some of the better looking entries in 3D filmmaking. Even the soundtrack seems more lively with this release. Danny Elfman's score is heavily complimented by the 7.1 surround sound and brings the cheerfulness back to a holiday classic. As with most 3D Blu-Rays these days, The Nightmare Before Christmas comes with 4 different ways to watch the film: 3D Blu-Ray, 2D Blu-Ray, DVD and a digital copy. The bonus features are pretty basic, but offer some great looks at some criminally underseen footage. One of the features is a short, filmed by Tim Burton back when he was just a writer for Disney, titled Frankenweenie. The timing on this feature couldn't be better, as Burton has announced the theatrical release for his feature-length adaptation of Frankenweenie. It's a cute little film, but leaves a lot to be imagined. Then again, this is why a feature length release of Frankenweenie might be just what Burton needs to pick up the slack on his creative filmmaking. The features are as follows: * Tim Burton Movie Introduction *"What's This?" Jack's Haunted Mansion Holiday Tour * Frankenweenie Short Film (Uncut Version) With Introduction by Tim Burton * Vincent- Short Film * Tim Burton's Original Poem Narrated by Christopher Lee * Audio Commentary By Tim Burton, Director Henry Selick and Music Designer Danny Elfman * Behind-The-Scenes Making Of The Movie * The Worlds Of Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas * Deleted Scenes Spread throughout 3 discs, The Nightmare Before Christmas 3D Blu-Ray completes any Tim Burton fans' collection. For those who don't care much for Burton's other work, Nightmare still carries some of the best 3D offered for an at home experience. |
