Michael Cera stars in this comedy about Nick Twisp, a 16-year-old teen who meets the smart and sexy Sheeni (Portia Doubleday) while on vacation. Unfortunately for him, she is with Trent, who is every girls dream dude. Now he must be bad in order to win her over, thus creating his alter ego, Francois.

Well, that's how the trailer sums up the film. In actuality, it's quite a bit different than what you would imagine. First off, he likes her and she likes him. This isn't the case where the good guy changes to win over the heart of the girl who only likes bad boys as the trailer suggests. Nick creates this alternate persona to get kicked out from his mom's house  so he can see her more often since he met her while on vacation.

Second, the trailer suggests that Zach Galifianakis has a decent role in the film. After all, he was a huge hit in The Hangover so it's reasonable to advertise his name. Thing is, he's only in the film briefly and barely gets any lines in. It was a huge disappointment after the buildup of the previews.

The movie itself is your typical Michael Cera film. While he does exhibit a more badass version of himself, he still remains the shy and awkward boy he's famous for playing. Think of the film as an R-rated Juno that's more focused on the sex part, rather than the pregnancy part. That's Youth in Revolt.

Francois is definitely funnier than his toned down counterpart, Nick. The fact that Michael Cera interacts with himself at times brings about some laughs as well. Much of the humor comes from the supporting actors too. Justin Long and Adhir Kalyan make the biggest impressions with Steve Buscemi and Ray Liotta making notable appearances as well.

Youth in Revolt has its fair share of laughs but you can't help but be disappointed by the hype the trailers create. If you're a Michael Cera fan then you'll have no problem watching his usual antics. For others, you can't help but want something more.

+1 Excellent review

This review is right on the money. A funny quirky flick. Could have been better. Unusual content focused more towards the younger crowd, yet it appeals to the older set also. Unusual and different.

another Dynamite

A different kid than Napoleon Dynamite, but just as funny. It plays on the awkwardness of a nerdy boy, who tried to get a girl by becoming something different, and in the course of doing so, he uprooted his dad, gave his mom's boyfriend a heart attack, burned down a town, and got his girlfriend kicked out of school. I love the clay animation and the cartoon part of the movie. It's so clever and whimsical.

Classic boy meets girl

This was a classic boy meets slutty girl and will do anything to be with her, even if it means ruining his life. I thought the scene where his alter ego was taking the beating for him, and he looked over and made the comment. The other thing is, did they ever get the car out the house?

this movie was a typical boy

this movie was a typical boy meets girl movie where the boy goes bad to get the girl. It was an ok movie but not worth paying full price to see it.
