To wrap up Independence Day weekend Nickelodeon presents a brand new Spongebob Squarepants special, The Clash of Triton. The half hour special features the voice talents of former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham, John O’Hurley (Family Feud, Dancing With the Stars), and Sebastian Bach (Skid Row, Gilmore Girls).

Its King Neptune’s 5,000th birthday and what better place to celebrate then the Krusty Krab, but not all is well with the King, he misses his son Triton. Consoled by his wife, Queen Amphitrite, the festivities continue but its not long before one particular employee of The Krusty Krab mentions the absence of the Kings son which results in the Kings story of their falling out and an end to the festivities. Being Spongebob, he takes it upon himself to fix the situation to make King Neptune’s birthday party the bash it should be. But reuniting Neptune and Triton could be more difficult then it seems. Can Spongebob make it happen? Find out July 5th only on Nick.

Being a Father as well as somewhat of a cartoon nerd, despite my lack of actual cable, I watch Spongebob on Netflix with my kids or…ahem…alone (sometimes), so I haven’t really seen anything new from old Squarepants in awhile. The Clash of Triton is a hilarious return for me mostly due to Sabastian Bach’s performance as Triton, completely running away with the entire special. John O’Hurley’s voice is automatically recognizable and so theatrically over the top its perfect. Victoria Beckham’s role isn’t huge but she does well for a voice actress, I can see a future for her in voice acting if she wanted to pursue that. She’s mentioned in reviews that her kids are fans of the show so this is probably a huge plus for her. In any case the special is so funny and entertaining that its half hour run time doesn’t seem quit fair and it flies by too quickly. Hopefully we’ll see a lot more of Bach back as Triton in more episodes. The Clash of Triton is sure to be a hit with the kids and even adults will find something to love here. Enjoy.

*Available July 5th Nickelodeon presents a The Clash of Triton themed game available for play on the Nick Spongebob page.
