His brother Edgar joined Johnny for three songs (“I Can't Stand It”, “Tobacco Road” and “Tell the Truth”) at the Woodstock Festival
The waiting is finally over for Johnny Winter fans. As talented as he is, it is very hard to believe that seven out of his eight Woodstock songs are being released for the first time in 40 years.
Johnny Winter may have been one of the lesser known artists at the time of Woodstock, but this festival definitely unleashed his talent. Winter plays very energetic rock blues as well as soul blues. Even though his blues guitar is doubtlessly impressive, I wish he sung more because he has also a very nice voice. He indeed plays a “mean” guitar on the almost 11 minutes long “Mean Town Blues”. It is rhythmic and catchy at first, and then becomes hypnotic, but unfortunately the solo drags out a bit towards the end. A few more tracks are also somewhat lengthy, but blues guitar enthusiasts may be pleased with the extended solos.
The other disc is his re-mastered self-titled album which was originally released in 1969, the same year in which Woodstock happened. His take on B.B. King’s “Be Careful With A Fool” most likely would not disappoint King whom he met as a teen in a Texas nightclub. If you have never heard of Johnny Winter, this set is a good start to get to know his skills and style. Just like the other four Woodstock Experience sets, this one comes with nice inserts, mini CD jackets and a 16 x 20 inch double-sided fold-out poster.
