Looks like the luck of the ogre is solidly in place: Shrek spin-off Puss In Boots pulled off a surprise second week atop the US box office according to studio estimates this weekend, with the animated adventure slipping just 3% to take $33 million. The film’s US total now stands at $75.5 million after just two weeks. From the look of this, DreamWorks Animation has a brand new franchise emerging. And despite launching in first place on Friday, Brett Ratner’s latest action comedy Tower Heist couldn’t compete with the cat, finally ending the weekend in second place with $25.1 million. Given the star power involved, it’s no quite the impressive haul as it might be. Still, the cash was enough to put it ahead of A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas, which had to settle for third place with $13 million. That’s less money than Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay took in its opening weekend back in 2008. Paranormal Activity 3 slipped to fourth place, adding $8.5 million, while In Time Slid down to fifth with $7.7 million. At sixth we find Footloose, which made $4.5 million, ahead of Real Steel in seventh, which took in $3.4 million. The Rum Diary began a quick fall down the charts, landing at eighth with $2.9 million. The Ides Of March was ninth with $2 million, and Moneyball rounded out the top 10, earning $1.9 million. Title: Puss in Boots |
