Dee Snider on the cover to an album wearing bright clown looking makeup with what looks like football shoulder pads with stuff hanging off it and that wild long wavy blond hair of his. Though as wild as the covers to their albums were, the songs were just as wild. Twisted Sister is a band that played to the role of what a wild rock and roll group is thought to be like and they played it in their songs. Here on this DVD/CD combo of Twisted Sister Live at Wacken The Reunion, I got to hear and see the band play at a concert. Now I’ve heard Twisted Sister songs before, many times, and I’ve seen their videos, but this is the first time that I’ve got to hear and see them when they did a live performance. I listened to the CD first and I wasn’t really that impressed with the songs. The band played the hair metal songs that made them popular and good, but as a live band they just didn’t sound as good as their studio performance. Without the studio to mix the levels and allowing the band to start over if they mess up the songs are played a little rougher. For instance there’s times when Dee Snider is singing away from the microphone. It’s easily heard when he either is moving his mouth away from the microphone or he’s moving the microphone away from his mouth. There’s also the times when he’s out of breath that affects the songs. Though the songs are still strong, they energy of them is high level, and the fun of the band is still there that makes the songs what they are, fun to listen to. The DVD of this is getting to see these songs performed live. I’m still not one to like watching a concert on tv and this is not really an exception, for the most part. That part that I do like from watching this DVD of the concert is all the interviews that are put in between some of the songs. Getting to hear what the band members thought about the band, the songs, and each other was worth sitting for nearly two hours watching this DVD. I was surprised to find out that the band members had such problems with each other and having such a hard time playing together. Before now I’d just assumed they were a hair metal band from the 80’s that was mainly a cult favorite that dropped out of the scene when the hair metal songs start to go out of style. Now I know this is not the case and it’s because of these interviews that are on the DVD. The sound quality was horrible. I had to pump up the volume on my tv to well above the normal limits of a DVD and this was just to be able to hear it well and not because I wanted to rock out. Even the picture quality is not the greatest but it gives it this retro feeling that didn’t hurt it that much. I did enjoy watching the DVD but only because of the interviews. Though the songs are performed with a whole lot of energy they are still live so they have the sound quality of a concert. Though best part of the DVD is the special feature of the photo gallery, for me that is. |
