Skizzy Mars

Skizzy Mars: The Interview
SHAKEFIRE (SF):
Tell your fans and listeners about the name, Skizzy Mars. Where’d it come from?
SKIZZY MARS (SM):
I don't even remember. My name was "Mars" at first. Like out of this world or something. I don't know where Skizzy even came from. It just stuck.
SF:
What is different about your music? What do your fans cling to when they listen?
SM:
It just sounds good. I don't really feel the need to create a certain sound that I've heard somewhere. I just wanna make shit that sounds good and has emotions. So a lot of stuff comes from that. Like I approach songwriting differently than the average rapper.
SF:
What inspired you to become an artist?
SM:
It makes me happy.
SF:
If you were given the opportunity to work with any artist, dead or alive, who would it be?
SM:
Kanye West.
SF:
Where did the title Phases come from?
SM:
I was just thinking about songs that make me feel a certain type of way. That's what songs should be. Every project I put out is going to be unique, a phase of my life. So this is just the beginning of that.
SF:
How involved are you in the recording process? Do you produce as well?
SM:
I don't produce but I'm not any less involved. I'm normally there creating tracks from scratch. That's why I credit my producers so much. We really collaborate.
SF:
Tell us where you are from? And your experience growing up?
SM:
I'm from New York City. I grew up living in Harlem but I went to high school on the Upper East Side. It was cool but different. I had a lot of different influences growing up, whether it was with music, fashion, or just culture in general.
SF:
Have you had other jobs before becoming a rap artist? Do you still have a job outside of rapping?
SM:
Absolutely not. I've been doing this since I got out of high school pretty much.
