Larry Klein: A Real American Idol

Larry Klein: A Real American Idol

When you hear American Bandstand and Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, what thoughts enter your mind? Your parent’s generation? The 50’s? Wholesome, conservative fun perhaps? So, you would probably assume that the co-creator and executive producer of those shows would also fit these descriptions? Executive Producer Larry Klein is far from the mold. We got a chance to speak with Klein this month about his start, his beliefs, the turmoil and what it’s like being in the middle of it all.

Klein is a busy man. Aside from being in the midst of Producing the yearly New Year’s Eve show for longtime friend Dick Clark, a Bob Marley reggae event, he is also producing the American Music Awards, set to air on ABC November 14.

Shakefire: Everything on schedule?

Larry Klein: Yeah, of course. We’re having a few minor issues but we always do. But, we’re definitely on schedule.

SF: How did you choose the presenters and host Jimmy Kimmel?

LK: It’s based on who’s hot right now. Not always nominees. Who has albums coming soon, a hit song right now, shit like that. Jimmy Kimmel was chosen because ABC wanted one of their own and he has that connection. ABC wanted him, he’s a funny guy, so we chose him.

SF: There has been a lot of talk about censorship, especially with the music industry. What are you doing to prevent any fiasco from happening?

LK: Nothing. Well, there’s always been the 5 second delay. But, I fuckin’ hate censorship. I have nothing in place to prevent anything. It’s a live fucking music show and that’s all. Things happen.

SF: You are one of the original producers of reality-based television. Any plans for anything new?

LK: Yeah, we’re bringing American Bandstand back in a reality show format.

SF: Like American idol?

LK: No, it will be different from that. You’ll see.

SF: What about shows like The Apprentice and Rebel Billionaire? Have you ever been approached about anything like that?

LK: Yeah, I was actually approached about doing a “story of my life” kind of thing. Having cameras follow me around and shit.-

SF: Is that something you are considering?

LK: Fuck now. I don’t want cameras following me around. Id on’t want everyone seeing everything I’m doing. I’m too fuckin’ busy for that.

SF: Any advice for people wanting to steal your job?

LK: (laughs)…Don’t give up. I know it sounds cliché but if you work hard enough, you’ll get there…or at least closer than not trying.

American Music Awards air on ABC Sunday November 14, 2004
