“Atlantis” is a show from BBC America that is set in the lost city of Atlantis. Jason (Jack Donnely) starts off in the present inside a submarine looking for his father under the ocean. During one of his expeditions, he is sucked into a portal that takes him to the city of Atlantis. Upon his arrival, he is befriended by Pythagoras (Robert Emms) and Hercules (Mark Addy). Along the way, the trio is confronted by unique mythical creatures and lots action and adventure. The entire first season of the show was released on DVD and Shakefire had a chance to review all 13 episodes spanning 3 DVDs.

If you grew up learning and listening to myths and stories of mythical creatures, like me, this is the perfect show for you. The writing is very mature and properly paced to keep you interested from the first episode to the final scene of the season finale. The characters are very likeable, relatable, and they add so much to the overall plot and content of the entire show. The acting is very well done and majority of the characters were perfect fits for their roles.

Also, most of the visuals looked great and felt like they were of even higher quality than most shows on DVD. However, the computer animation was not as realistic or fluid as I had hoped. For instance, the two-headed dragon in the first episode looked sloppy or amateurish and could have had more detail. Other than that, I thought this was a pretty good show with excellent writing, but the computer animation could have been better. Regardless, I still recommend you check out Atlantis: Season 1 to fulfill your mythical and fantasy creature viewing needs. For those reasons, I am giving this TV on DVD set a “B.”
