Like Borat, Bad Grandpa takes an actor (Johnny Knoxville) and puts them in disguise then sends them on their way through a loose storyline that involves hidden cameras and unsuspecting people whose every reaction makes up the majority of the films power.
On the outside Bad Grandpa seems like a farcical dis to the overused buddy road trip film, this time partnering Irving Zisman (Knoxville), a recently widowed senior whose looking to score, whose been saddled with his grandson Billy (Nicoll), whose mother has just gone to jail. The premise of their story is that Irving is to take Billy to his deadbeat father a few states over. Along the way the two transport a dead body, shoplift, hit on women, and form an inevitable bond.
PICTURE AND AUDIO QUALITY:
Though Bad Grandpa uses a few different camera’s over the course of the film, looks like all but one are HD cameras, color is vibrantly fantastic showing off bright blue skies, the lush greenery of the road and high detail at almost all times. The only time the film looks terrible is when shots are done using a hidden low quality camera that makes the picture look fuzzy, discolored and out of focus. Still, it’s a pretty amazing looking BD for a hidden camera film.
Audio is great. While this isn’t a blow em up action science fiction spectacular the level of audio does wonders as a counterpart for the jaw dropping hilarity of the comedy. Knoxville crashing through a store window or dropping his dead wife’s are given that extra oomph to drive the moment home.
