The sequel to The Da Vinci Code is here! Conspiracy theorists rejoice! Church apologists batten down your hatches and prepare for war!

Or maybe not.

After all the hoopla and controversy from Code, you’d think that people would be getting up in arms in preparation for Angels and Demons. What of the Illuminati and their supposed ties to the Catholic Church? Surely that’s worth some righteous anger somewhere.

But if you take a quick survey of most of the press leading up to this release, the usual suspects have been relatively calm. No big protests or boycotts, simply statements from the Church/the Vatican/various Catholic leaders about how it’s a work of fiction and how people should take it with a grain of salt.

And you know what? That’s probably the perfect response for this film, because in truth, it’s really just a mystery/conspiracy theory thriller in religious clothing. While it implies that the Illuminati is a secret organization bent on getting revenge on the Catholic Church for years of persecution, this assertion isn’t that controversial (at least for this Protestant-raised reviewer).

In truth, I found The Da Vinci Code to be a much more thought-provoking film. I’d never seen it until a few weeks ago, when I checked it out to get caught up on the adventures of symbologist (is that even a word?) Robert Langdon. While that film definitely has its flaws, the overall story seemed a little weightier and more engaging.

Here’s the story of Angels and Demons in a nutshell: the pope has died and just as the papal congress to select his successor begins, the four leading candidates are kidnapped and clues are dropped that the long-dormant Illuminati might be behind the abductions. There’s also another sub/side plot about a theft of anti-matter from the CERN research facility in Switzerland. The two threads become interwoven pretty quickly, but I won’t give away how or why, as that’s pretty much the extent of the story for the whole film.

Angels and Demons seems to simply fly by, hopping from one location to the next, each clue popping up just in time to lead Langston and the Vatican police to the next location. While I’m sure that the filmmakers were concerned about quickening the pace and tightening the editing after the long walk that is Code, it seems like they went to the opposite extreme here. There’s a lot of Bourne-esque shaky cam work, which seems exciting…until you realize that all you’re seeing is Langdon’s point of view as he heads down a hidden dark stone hallway in a church.

In the end, this isn’t a bad film so much as it feels almost like a throwaway one. It’s the kind that, in a few years, will play on repeat during the weekends on TBS or TNT. It’s got solid performances from all of its lead actors, but ultimately there’s just not much to hold onto in the plot.

A really long wild goose chase

Lots of actions but they don't make up for the annoying repeated failure to catch the murderer, each time only 4-5 minutes late. These failures lasted a good 2 hours of the movie, and only in the last 15 minutes that Tom Hanks finally got a leg up. I would enjoy it better had they cut the wild goose chase part shorter. Overall not bad.

Angles & Demons

This movie starts out with way too much talking and not enough actions, but the ending is very good which makes it worth while to sit through this over 2-hour long movie.

Angles & Demons

I have not watched the The Da Vinci Code yet! but I liked this one. Twisted end. Very educational and informative.

Icarus Revived

Angels and Demons follows a similar Illuminati path as The DaVinci Code. As such, the film is somewhat the same action based, solve a mystery while running through Italy and the Vatican thriller to beat a 'doomsday deadline' as DaVinci Code. Tom Hanks provides a solid perfomance despite having to provide historical explanations and context throughout the film to keep the viewer engaged. The cinematography and set design was first rate especially given the film's setting. Those who read the book will find it holds pretty true to the novel with the necessary few embellishments to amp up the tension and drama on the screen.
A worthy addition to the summer blockbuster schedule. An action movie for those who enjoy intellectual intrigue - especially the ending reveal- in their action films. Go see and enjoy!

angels & demons

enjoyed the movie although i wondered how the gang of two (Illuminati) could outwit and out work the entire vatican police. tom hanks, as usual was superb. maybe it was really a gang of one.

Not as good as I hoped

I admit I was excited to see this movie however it fell short of my expectations. Too many things did not make sense to me (why no one on the street ever noticed anything strange going on, etc.). The ending does not seem it would even be possible from a scientific angle. Overall it was a fun movie to watch.

About as good as I coulda hoped

It was no Da Vinci Code and it didn't measure up to the book. I'd say it gets about a good B-...and I'll have forgotten this movie by next week.

Sorta good

Is everyone in Rome creepy looking? That's what it felt like. You were suspicious of everyone. It was raining so a friend and I decided to see something. That's pretty much how I can describe this movie - just a good reason to stay out of the rain. The plot is so-so, there's a ton of violence (i.e. burning scenes), and I'll probably not remember too much of it next week. I enjoyed the ending but I couldn't believe it was 2 1/2 hours long. It went by quickly. All in all - it gets a B from me.
