Dogs Will Inherit The Earth!

According to the North Shore Animal League, an estimated 1 million dogs in the United States have been named the primary beneficiary in their owner's will.

Working in a veterinary clinic, I see my fair share of spoiled rotten animals.  From owners who bring in complicated feeding instructions akin to a full length biography of their pet to other owners who bring in 1,500 blankets for a one night boarding stay, we get it all.  Heck, just the other day an owner brought in premade food for their dogs - chopped up eggs/toast for breakfast and noodles for supper.

The new Nat Geo WILD series Spoiled Rotten Pets takes spoiling to a whole new level.  Hosted by Beth Stern, wife of shock jock Howard Stern, the show features pets of all kinds being pampered to the fullest extent possible.  Like Mike Rowe on Dirty Jobs, Beth joins in on the fun to experience these moments firsthand.  The show premieres on Saturday, April 20th at 9PM ET and will typically air in a one hour block consisting of two episodes.

Each episode alternates between two or three owners showing how they lavish their beloved pets.  The first episode, "Princess & The Pig," focuses on the owners of potbellied pigs, reptiles, and a Maltese Yorkie.  Beth guides viewers on a tour of the pig owners' house including the minature home built outside exlusively for the pigs themselves.  The self-proclaimed reptile guy shows us how he cares for over 100 reptiles including pythons and a monitor lizard.  Last, but not least, we meet a woman who has acquired over 200 dresses for her Maltese Yorkie and has also established a Pup Scout group in New York City.  Good news fellas, she's single! Other episodes include ferrets at a Chicago ferret show, Afghan hounds who have their own bedrooms in the Hamptons, and a Bar Mitzvah for a dog that will probably cost more than my wedding.

Having only been familiar with Beth as the wife of Howard Stern, I wasn't quite sure what to expect from her.  Obviously an avid animal lover in her own right, Beth is extremely down to earth and kind to all of the owners - no matter how crazy they might seem.  These early episodes seem to stick to the Northeast of the United States so hopefully the show is able to expand to other parts of the country.  Spoiled Rotten Pets is one of those rare programs that can be enjoyed by all ages.  Check it out not only for the animals, but the eccentric owners as well.

Reality type tv never ceases to amaze me. Spoiled pets is absurd, but I still want to watch it!
