Artist: Claudine Album: Wrestling Consciousness Members: Claudine, Isaac Bolivar, Jason Wall, Mark Kenoly Label: Claudine Music Tracks: 15 Type: LP Release Date: September 27, 2011 Discs: 1 Rating: ( )Grade: B This album is like a time machine, somehow being new and feeling like it is from another era. Normally when people write a thing like that what they mean is that it feels like whatever they are talking about has a 1920s, 30s, 40s, 50s or even 60s feel. But Claudine’s Wrestling Consciousness feels like it could double for the soundtrack of a late 1980s movie. There is a sound here, like the tail end of hair metal pushing into pop music with maybe a dash of country. As I listen I can practically see the scenes of this non-existent Hollywood film unfold. It would probably be about a young girl moving into the city to try to start a music career, and she meets a guy, but something breaks them up, maybe he goes back to a former girlfriend. And there is a record producer who promises our star a deal, which he delivers on, but at a price. In the end, she gets out of the deal to keep making her own music and she meets the guy again and they agree to go out to dinner and give it another try. Roll credits. Is this a good movie? .. er... I mean, is this a good album? I’m not sure. I didn’t want to claw my eardrums out, in fact it was kind of pleasant. There is also a cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”, which I think is required for every band to record at some point in their career, and it isn’t too shabby, sort of surprising even. Should you own this album? Perhaps. Give it a listen and see. |
