Artist: Kip Moore Album: Up All Night Label: MCA Nashville Tracks: 14 Type: LP Release Date: April 24, 2012 Discs: 1 Rating: ( )Grade: A Bonus Tracks Marry Was The Marrying Kind, Motorcycle, Somethin' Bout A Truck (Acoustic Version) Kip Moore’s latest release, Up All Night - Deluxe Edition, is for all intents and purposes a well crafted album. Moore takes a little bit of pop sensibility and infuses it into the current country sound. He has a fantastic voice, can piece together a song extremely well, and let’s face it, by the time I’m done with this review I’m going to give this sucker an A, but I’m not in love with Up All Night. My wife listens to a lot of country music and every time I listen to it I think the musical aspect of it is beautiful, a bit repetitious at time yes, but the studio players and some of the country singers who play their own instruments play with a lot of wordless emotion. When it comes to the lyrical I’m usually not a fan. Beer, women, heartache, God, trucks. It gets a bit old when every song has the same theme. This was one of the problems that I had with Up All Night. Take the first three songs off of the album; Drive Me Crazy, Beer Money, Somethin’ Bout A Truck. The songs were either about women, beer, or trucks or a combination of all of the above. I can find that anywhere in the country world. What have you got for me that has more of an accessible substance then drinking, driving around in a truck, and sleeping with a woman? Track 7 is when the album opened up to me. Hey Pretty Girl is such a remarkable song that deviates from the individual vantage point and radio sensibility that the first six songs rely on. It’s the kind of track that you would play for a loved one and not just something that would sound good coming through a jukebox at some dive. Unfortunately that inability to move away from radio and offer up more moments like this one is what makes me feel that while the album is fantastic fun, eventually it will wear on me and I’ll either shelve it or give it away. As always final judgment is yours. |
