Artist: Secret Agent 23 Skidoo Album: Underground Playground Genre: Kids, Rap/Hip Hop Label: Kela-Kaj Enterprises Tracks: 16 Type: Digital Release Date: August 31, 2010 Discs: 1 Rating: ( )Grade: B Secret Agent 23 Skidoo’s description of his own album reads thusly: “Secret Agent 23 Skidoo is back with 16 tracks of head nodding, brain building, soul fried kid hop goodness! Featuring some real special guests like MC Fireworks and Gift of Gab from Blackalicious, along with the cream of the Ashevegas music scene, this is platter that matters. More Fraggle than Wiggle, dig the anti-Barney over the newest version of old school funk!” Unlike a lot of promo materials coming directly from an artist or a label, that blurb is actually pretty darn accurate. This is a record of kid’s hip-hop music that’s really catchy and really well done. I especially like the Fraggle/Wiggle comparison. As any parent knows, there’s a surplus of really crappy stuff out there in children’s entertainment, so it’s a cause for celebration whenever you come across something that’s actually good. Musically, this album has an old school rap, almost stripped down production feel to it. Again, given the sheer amount of kids’ related noise out there, something like this that’s good and well produced is a very welcome change of pace. The songs themselves tackle all the tough kids’ issue of today: arguing with Mommy and Daddy, daydreaming, missing home after having to move, etc. All the hard-hitting issues that kids face. In short, if you have a kid and love hip-hop, you definitely need to pick this up. It’s a lot of fun and well worth the purchase. |
