Title: Blue Crush 2 Edition: Blu-Ray/DVD/Digital Copy Combo Pack Starring: Sharni Vinson, Sasha Jackson, Elizabeth Mathis, Patrick Lyster Director: Mike Elliott Studio: Universal Runtime: 120 minutes Release Date: June 7, 2011 Discs: 2 MPAA Rating: Rating: ( )Grade: C+ There's a lot of hatred for direct to the store sequels. Most of these complaints center around the fact that there is a general lack of effort put forth in these offerings. Blue Crush 2 isn't much different. Though a sequel in title, Blue Crush 2 has nothing to do with the original outside of having female stars and surfboards. To say the script is formulaic would be an understatement, everything is easily predictable. The romantic subplot is laughably so. Another complaint is Gideon Emory as the father. He looks to be in his late twenties and is supposed to have an adult daughter (the fake grey in his hair didn't help). The worst cinematic crime, however, is that main character's dramatic resolution seems like it was forgotten until after her friend's subplot was filmed. Dana emotional resolution seems underplayed and trite when compared to the success of Pushy. Complaints aside, there is some redemption for this movie. The locations are beautiful and the special effects are often seamless. The cinematography is on par with a feature, putting it leagues ahead of many direct to disc films. The presence of special effects is sedate, until one looks at the special features. The soundtrack is fairly large and includes some popular tracks. Now the questions: Does the good outweigh the bad? Not really. Is this one of the better examples of direct to disc? Yeah, the script is lacking, but it was entertaining. All things considered, Blue Crush 2 is a fun watch but not a good buy. |
