Interesting Tidbits

70 songs were used in the 1st 13 episodes of the show.

“Glee” has been on the FOX Network for about 3 seasons now and they have a very strong fan base. Their fans, or “Gleeks,” come from various backgrounds, sexual orientations, and age ranges. It is a fun loving show that follows a glee club in Ohio that covers or remakes songs across various genres and pushes boundaries on network TV. The show is filled with comedy, drama, and lots of good music. “Glee” has already licensed itself out to various products and memorabilia, except for a concert movie in 3-D, until now.

I had a chance to review the Blu-ray version of “Glee: The Concert Movie” and not the 3-D version. After viewing it on Blu-ray, I was not sure why the 3-D was even needed. The sound and picture quality were already great and the 3-D was not needed to make this an even better experience for any Gleeks. They performed a bunch of their memorable covers of songs that had been performed on the show. Everything from “”Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey to “P.Y.T.” by Michael Jackson to “Jessie’s Girl” by Rick Springfield was included on the set list. They had something for everyone from country to alternative to top 40 to 80’s to R&B to even Broadway show tunes.

Just like on the show, some of the song covers were better than others. For instance, I liked Brittany’s (Heather Morris) cover of “Slave 4 U” by Britney Spears because of the seductive dancing and how well she sang the song better than the original version. However, I really loved all the songs performed by Blaine (Darren Criss) and the Warblers because they were on-key and they changed it enough to make it their own song. Some of the other songs in the concert didn’t fare too well. For instance, “Lucky” by Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat was performed by Quinn (Dianna Agron) and Sam (Chord Overstreet) and their performance sounded exactly like the original song making it very boring. Also, I was not a big fan of Artie (Kevin McHale) and the guys rapping Jay-Z’s verses on “Empire State of Mind” because it sounded awkward and out of place. There were some really good performances in the concert, but a couple songs could have been left out.

Another gripe I had was the flow of the concert. The show usually has a story line to tie everything together, but it was missing in the concert. They included some backstage footage of the cast being silly and some heartfelt stories of Gleeks and the effects the show has had on them, but it was not enough to make the whole Blu-ray seem fluid. The concert lacked any conversation, interactions, comedy or drama from the stars and the performances felt forced without any logic in the order. I liked most of the performances, but would have liked it flow or transition a lot more smoothly into the next song.

“Glee: The Concert Movie” was mostly pretty good, with a couple of minor flaws. If you are a Gleek, you are going to watch it regardless or you already have seen it. It is packed with a lot of extras which adds a lot of extra value to this combo pack for any Glee fan. If you aren’t a Glee fan, it is still worth a watch to hear the covers or song remakes because more than likely someone you know is a fan of the show. For those reasons, I am giving this movie a “B.”
