Usually my basic rule for recent animated films on Blu-Ray is that they can do no wrong. Of course one movie would have to come along and prove me wrong and that would be Hoodwinked Too! Hood Vs. Evil. When the first film came out I was bored with fairy tale films set in alternate universes, not to mention how poorly this new film looked. Hoodwinked Too is just as poorly looking. Its a big budget theater film that should have went straight to DVD simply for the fact that it hardly challenges any of the other studio’s as far as animation style goes or even story. That right there is where we see the problem the most with the Blu-Ray Transfer. If your just a completionist then of course you’ll have to own the film but HD only makes the bad look worse.
QUALITY:
Hoodwinked Too has a very good Blu-Ray Transfer. but because the film is so poorly animated and so blandly colored the only thing being broadcast in HD is the films flaws. Characters are flat looking, sometimes coming off as toys that have found their way into some stop motion animation. and the use of HD on these bland characters makes them look even blander. You’ll notice that detail is very weak, stiff almost, and that surface texture doesn’t do much to heighten the experience. Color is pretty drab so not much to enjoy there. For a BD your getting all that the technology has to offer: clarity, definition, and sharpness, but the film itself is anything but which makes all of this wonderful technology seem almost moot. Its probably not as bad as all that but once you’ve seen films from studio’s like Disney and Dreamworks you probably wont think much of this film. Audio was pretty weak. I had to crank my surround sound up beyond 30 clicks to get it to a presentable sound quality. My wife and kids complained when I had it on 20, the standard for most movies through my system, that they could barely hear the dialogue.
