Title: Marvel Animation: 6 Film Set Edition: 482 mins Genre: Action/Adventure, Animation, Sci-Fi Studio: Lionsgate Release Date: October 13, 2009 Format: DVD Discs: 6 MPAA Rating: Rating: ( )Grade: B Bad news first: there’s absolutely no new content in this box set. It is simply a catchall package for the six direct-to-DVD films that Marvel Animation has released to date. In other words, if you already own Ultimate Avengers, Ultimate Avengers 2, The Invincible Iron Man, Doctor Strange: The Sorcerer Supreme, Next Avengers: Heroes Of Tomorrow, and/or Hulk Vs., you’re not getting anything new here. In some cases, you may be getting even less, as some of these releases originally came out in 2-disc editions or even Blu-Ray format. The versions included here are the standard def, single-disc releases. So there’s that. The good news is that, if you don’t already own any of these (or possibly only one or two), this isn’t a terrible way to complete your collection in one fell swoop. The films here are actually quite good by direct-to-DVD standards. Obviously, the big focus these days in the comic/movie world is the live action film, but these animated features are a cool way to get another glimpse into the Marvel Comic mythology. Solid voice acting, great animation (for the most part – Iron Man’s got some wonky looking computer animation mixed in with the traditional work), and good storylines are the name of the game here. So the bottom-line is? Buy this if you don’t own any of these already. But if you do, avoid this like the plague. Actually, that’s probably too harsh. Just ignore it and keep dreaming of Iron Man 2, X-Men: New Class, Captain America: First Avenger or any of the other Marvel Film projects in the works. |
