In this digital age the printed newspaper has a hard time staying in the game. News, information, entertainment, and everything else the world wants to know being instantly accessed on the internet, the printed form just can’t keep up and because of this some of the big companies that have been around for over hundred years are going out of business because of the internet.  One of these companies that take a hard hit is the New York Times but the large, worldwide, newspaper is not going to lay down and let the world pass it by.

IT’S A DOCUMENTARY ABOUT THE NEWSPAPER – KIND OF:
I thought that Page One: Inside The New York Times was going to be this interesting, thought provoking, look at the way one of the worlds largest newspapers works. This was supposed to show the inside workings of this legendary paper, at least that’s what it says on the back cover to the case. I was wanting to see what the inside of this newspaper looked like, how the inner cogs turned to produce such breaking news that this paper has but it fell short, by a huge way.

This documentary comes in at 92 minutes long, however watching it made it feel like it was 392 minutes long. This actually felt a little like torture rather than entertainment and informative. Page One quickly went from giving a inside look at what was going on in the world on news print vs the digital print to just having people talk about the same things over and over again without really telling me anything. If I was asked how a decision is made to what story would be good to write for the next days paper I couldn’t answer, same goes for on answering the decision process of picking the few stories out of many to be printed, in fact there was nothing I got from watching this documentary other than the internet is making it rough for the printed format.

Along the way of watching this there are some tidbits where it semi-interesting but there where only a few and very far between each other. I just wanted this documentary to be over with and had tuned out half way through it. David Carr, one of the main guys being used in this documentary who is one of the big writers for the paper is the most interesting aspect to this documentary with his blunt attitude. Problem is, what makes him interesting at first turned into being just a little annoying by the end. I know there was a point this documentary was trying to make but the problem with it is that I don’t know what it was and whatever it was I didn’t go away from watching this with any knowledge other than being glad it was over. About the only good thing about this documentary was that it had some nice quality to it. Being a Blu Ray may have made it look good in color and quality but it didn’t help it enough to make the documentary enjoyable.
