Title: Surveillance Starring: Julia Ormond, Bill Pullman, Pell James, Ryan Simpkins Director: Jennifer Chambers Lynch Studio: Magnolia Home Entertainment Runtime: 97 minutes Release Date: August 18, 2009 Format: DVD Discs: 1 MPAA Rating: Rating: ( )Grade: D+ Bonus Features Commentary with Director & Mac Miller, Charlie Newmark, Surveillance: The Watched Are Watching (Making of with interview with the cast & crew), HDNet: A Look At Surveillance, Deleted Scenes And Alternate Ending FBI agents Elizabeth Anderson and Sam Hallaway are brought in to investigate some horrible murders that have taken place and could possibly be tied to the serial killers they have been chasing. What they get is pieces of stories from a druggie, a small girl, and a crooked cop leaving them to have to fill in the blanks. As more of the story is revealed the more twists it takes. The set up is somewhat slow, but that didn’t really bother me as the story was interesting. At least at first. The twists too were decent and not something you see every day (but it’s been done before). The violence, the killings, and some of the acting were good (Ryan Simpkins – the little girl & Pell James – the druggie). What let’s you down is Bill Pullman and Julia Ormond. These are two actors I have enjoyed in many other movies; but they were part of the reason this movie is getting a low grade. They start off just fine, embracing their roles as two harden FBI agents. But as the story starts to improve, the twists start coming they fall apart. Their acting is unbelievable and they were both woefully miscast. So much so that it starts to become difficult to look past their acting to really appreciate the direction the movie has taken. Because of this “Surveillance” feels very uneven and actually becomes a little uncomfortable to watch as Bill Pullman’s acting turns somewhat comical. Bonus features at least help out some and give the alternate ending a look. It might not be that original but it could have very easily been used instead. |
