Title: Swing Vote Genre: Comedy Starring: Kevin Costner, Madeline Carroll, Dennis Hopper, Kelsey Grammer, Stanley Tucci, Nathan Lane, Paula Patton, George Lopez Director: Joshua Michael Stern Studio: Touchstone Runtime: 120 Minutes Release Date: January 13, 2009 Format: DVD Discs: 1 MPAA Rating: Rating: ( )Grade: D- Film Facts The Band Costner performs with in the film is his real band Modern West. Kevin Costner plays Bud Johnson, an apathetic American who gets pulled into the middle of a political snafu when his vote is needed to decide the Presidency. Seemingly hopeless Bud finds himself the center of attention but will he use his new found clout to help shape the way the country is run or will he simply take advantage of a profitable situation? The film is a satire on politics but it kind of wobbles about in its commitment between being funny or taking itself to seriously. The film will keep you entertained but for me it was a fruitless venture that didn’t supply any memorable moments other then the performance by Madeline Carroll, who plays Costner’s intelligent young daughter. The DVD bonus features offer up very little as well. The Inside Campaign: The Politics of Production has the cast and crew interviewing about the film but mostly its all good news, didn’t see that coming, and it just feels like a majority of them have been pushing spin for so long they don’t even try to cloud their lack of enthusiasm. Deleted & Extended Scenes didn’t excite me either. Hopper and Grammer get their turn to over dramatize their political awakenings and for the most part Hopper does a pretty good job but not so good it makes up for the fact that these scenes were deleted for a reason and I could have gone on with my life without ever seeing them. Extended scene? What’s the point. The only surprisingly good bonus feature is the music video from Costner’s band Modern West which is really just ripped from the film but it’s a good song. Finally there is some audio commentary for film. Not much to boost the need for a lackluster film. |
