Title: The Devil's Rock Genre: Foreign Films, Horror, Suspense, War Starring: Craig Hall, Matthew Sunderland, Jessica Grace Smith, Karlos Drinkwater, Luke Hawker Director: Paul Campion Studio: Entertainment One Runtime: 86 minutes Release Date: February 14, 2012 Format: DVD Discs: 1 MPAA Rating: Rating: ( )Grade: D Factoid: The design of the German bunker is based on the real WW2 German bunker MP4, a Range Finding and Observation Tower which still exists in Guernsey, in the Channel Islands. ~IMDB June 5, 1944, on the eve of D-Day, two Allied Commando’s from New Zealand following orders to destroy gun emplacements inside enemy territory on the Channel Islands. Upon landing the two men come across a massive bunker where they attempt to accomplish their goal only to find things amiss. Deep within the bunker they hear a woman scream. One of the commandos, Ben Grogan (Craig Hall; 30 Days of Night), enters the bunker to investigate. What he finds is not what he expected. The basic premise of this film is that two men stumble across a bunker that houses an Occult section of Hitler’s war machine. Col. Klaus Meyer (Matthew Sunderland) and his men managed to conjure a demon for the war but found that they could not control it. What happens next seems like it should be an extremely interesting watch but loses its appeal with predictability and a bit of a cop out ending that leaves little to the imagination. Bad writing, poor execution, and a lack of story for the sake of gore simply kill the picture. With very little to go on except a promise of suspense that leads nowhere all I could do while watching the film was point out the flaws. For example, in one scene Meyer uses a knife to cut off a dead man’s leg. Is that even possible? Maybe there might be a slight chance but it happens all too quickly. It’s a standard issue combat weapon not a bone saw. In another scene Meyer bashes in a dead soldiers skull and removes his brain. The skull is the hardest part of the human skeleton. For the effort he puts into it I find it hard to believe he could break the man’s skull and remove the brain with only the butt of his, again, standard issue combat knife. Those are just two things that I got hung up on other then the film being a complete waste of my time aside from some very cool Weta special effects, which there were not that many of. I wanted to believe the praise on the back of the DVD case that said this was “One of the best horror flicks this year” but alas it was not. As always final judgment is yours. |
