Title: The Fifth Commandment Genre: Action/Adventure Starring: Keith David, Bokeem Woodbine, Rick Yune, Dania Ramirez, Roger Yuan Director: Jesse V. Johnson Studio: Sony Pictures Runtime: 90 Minutes Release Date: July 28, 2009 Format: DVD MPAA Rating: Rating: ( )Grade: F First lesson according to my version of The Book - #5 is not Thou Salt Not Kill (yep had to look that up). There is, however, a whole lot of it going on in this movie so we’re going to roll with it. It’s not that deep of a movie to mince hairs over. Max "Coolbreeze" Templeton (Keith David) is a hit man that saves a young boy after his family is killed and then raises him the only way he knows – as a killer. At some point Templeton’s biological son, Miles (Bokeem Woodbine), goes off to the military to walk a different path. Fast forward to adulthood were Chance (Rick Yune) and Miles are now all grown up. Chance has followed in his adopted fathers footsteps to become an assassin while Miles is now a bodyguard. Luck would have it (or is it just the really bad writing set-up) that a hit is put out on the woman Miles is guarding. Chance drops the deal because he won’t go up against his brother. So other really bad nasty hit men are hired for the job. I’m not talking about their personalities (even though that’s what they want us to think). I’m referencing their unbelievably bad acting abilities and nasty costume/make-up jobs. This movie was on a downhill track from the opening frame. I’m all about a good cheesy kung-fu movie. Bad dubbing is an art form! And some good kung-fu fighting is why I love those movies! But there is a serious lack of fighting and an over abundance of bad acting to just make this one painful to sit though. Predictably, Chance must take revenge for the killing of his brother (where was dad through all this?). Somewhere in all this Chance is taken to a Taiwanese jail that happens to have all white American cops and one very hunky shirtless Russian interrogator. Um where are the Taiwanese in Taiwan? And don’t even get me going on the maiden-in-distress mark, Dania Ramirez (you might know her better as the black goo-eyed Maya from Heroes). She was beyond bad on Heroes but she’s sunk to an even lower bad in this one. And then of course we have to have the father-son face off at the end. But the stone cold killer assassin can’t kill the boy he saved now can he. It’s all just bad government cheese at this point – layer upon layer of it. This one gets a big ol fat F for fake, foney and total Fail. |
