Ben Randall is legendary among the Coast Guard; but when a rescue goes wrong it is decided that Ben should take some time off from rescuing and instead train new recruits.  Enter Jake Fischer. He is a cocky swim champ that seems to be more focused on breaking records instead of working in a team. Because of this Ben takes a special interest in Jake and cuts him no slack.

As far as this type of movie goes The Guardian hits all the mandatory features: Tough veteran gives hell to the rookie because he sees himself in him, a tragedy that one has to overcome, a love interest, difficult training, and then a chance to prove oneself. There are some funny parts, some inspiring moments, and some focus on what it takes to be in the Coast Guard. I liked The Guardian and if you liked movies similar to Top Gun I think that you will too. It was done well if it is a little too cookie cutter and perhaps a little too long.

If you saw it in theaters the DVD does have more to offer. There is an alternate ending that some could say is happier. There are 4 deleted scenes with optional commentary by the director and the writer. “The Guardian Making Waves” feature is interesting showing the training the cast went through, interviews with the actors, how they made the waves, and about the story. Then if you feel there might not have been enough focus on the actual Coast Guard you will want to watch “Unsung Heroes: So Others May Live” a look at the real Coast Guard.
