Title: The Last Station Starring: James McAvoy, Christopher Plummer, Helen Mirren, Paul Giamatti, Anne-Marie Duff Director: Michael Hoffman Studio: Sony Pictures Classics Runtime: 112 mins Release Date: June 22, 2010 Format: BLU-RAY Discs: 1 MPAA Rating: Rating: ( )Grade: C Whether by design or accident, The Last Station is a film with (I imagine) a rather narrow audience. I believe the sum total of fans (existing or potential) could be expressed this way: Tolstoy aficionados and/or fans of Christopher Plummer, Helen Mirren, James McAvoy or Paul Giamatti. Now obviously, that’s an incredible cast, but the subject matter is so specialized (eccentric? esoteric?) that I have a hard time appealing to a lot of people. I’m sure that Tolstoy fans will have a field day with it, but unless you’re a Russian history/literature buff, I doubt that you’ll get pulled into the story. BONUS FEATURES: Obviously I wasn’t that taken with this film, but if you’re a fan of any of the cast, it might be worth your time to check it out at least once. |
