This documentary by Ted Wood is about the history of race in America that’s been tied into surfing. African-American surfers give their views about the race issues that has been part of the way people live while also being surfers. Yep, that’s about the best discription that I can give for this documentary, that’s it’s about race, surfers, some history of the two, while telling how the fit together.

At first I thought this was going to be about surfing but then it ended up being about African-American surfers and how they have been stereotyped for not being able to surf, but then it kept going by delving into some history of surfing while also being about race. There’s enough information to keep the story interesting by telling about how there are views on African-Americans and surfing and how they are pretty much wrong. It kept me interested in watching it though I thought it could have been about 15 minutes shorter. There’s a lot talked about in this documentary but it felt like it was drawn out at times to make the movie last longer than it was or possibly just trying to make that moment in the documentary more dramatic or stand out more to the viewer. All it really did for me was make me want to have it speed up to get to the next point..

Ted Woods has used the basic format for documentaries, making the way this looks nothing out of the ordinary or exciting. About the most exciting moments this documentary has going for it is watching all the surfing and the locations that it shows. It made me want to learn how to surf and be at the beach but being that I don’t surf I wasn’t finding this to be high on my list of interesting documentaries. All the old footage that is used in the documentary is a cool feature that was cool watching and though the quality of it was not the greatest but it’s the old look of it that makes it cool to watch. Sound quality on this was decent enough that I didn’t have to struggle to hear what was being said, which in this case being that it’s a documentary is a important feature.
