Show: Mythos the Complete Series Genre: Educational Starring: Joseph Campbell, Susan Sarandon Studio: Acorn Media Runtime: 900 mins Release Date: September 18, 2012 Format: DVD Discs: 6 Rating: ( )Grade: B+ Joseph Campbell was a writer and lecturer whose exploration of storytelling, philosophy and belief systems has had far-reaching influence in the latter portion of the 20th century (and indeed, on into the 21st). He explored such concepts and the monomyth and the hero's journey. If you're a film fan of any measure, chances are good you've at least heard his name in passing. His work "The Hero with a Thousand Faces" had a huge impact on George Lucas as he was in the process of writing Star Wars. That sort of information is all good and well if you just want a quick glance at Campbell and his basic contributions to modern art and film. But if you're looking to go deeper (a lot deeper) into Campbell's work and philosophies, this complete collection of the Mythos documentary would be a great place to start. This is literally (and simply) a series of talks that Campbell gave on a speaking tour near the end of his life. It's in-depth, rich, and exhaustive (albeit also exhausting, depending on your state of mind). Intercut with commentary from Susan Sarandon, the footage itself is basic enough, but effective. The transfer looks like it came straight from VHS tapes, so bear that in mind if you're thinking about buying this. As for the content itself, it tends to be rather dry, as you might expect from a philosopical speaking tour. It's not a summer blockbuster that's going to bring down the house and it's definitely not for everyone. But for those with the passion and interest for this sort of material, this is the motherlode. |
